Catalytic Converter Basics
1. What is a catalytic converter?
A catalytic converter is an emission-control component installed in a vehicle’s exhaust system. It uses a catalyst-coated substrate to convert harmful exhaust pollutants into less harmful substances. Depending on the engine and emission-control system, catalytic converters can use different catalyst formulations, substrates and configurations.
2. What is a three-way catalytic converter?
A three-way catalytic converter (TWC) is primarily used in gasoline engines to control three major pollutants: carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) and nitrogen oxides (NOx).
The catalyst promotes oxidation of CO and HC and reduction of NOx. TWC design depends on the engine, exhaust temperature, air-fuel control, substrate, catalyst coating and applicable emission requirements.

3. What is the difference between TWC, DOC, SCR, DPF and GPF?
These components perform different emission-control functions.
| Product | Main Application | Fungsi Utama |
|---|---|---|
| TWC | petrol | Controls CO, HC and NOx |
| DOC | Diesel | Oxidizes CO and HC and supports emission control |
| SCR | Diesel | Reduces NOx using a suitable reductant system |
| DPF | Diesel | Captures particulate matter |
| GPF | petrol | Captures gasoline particulate matter |
4. What are catalytic converter substrates?
A substrate is the internal structure that supports the catalyst coating and provides channels for exhaust gas flow.
Common substrate materials include ceramic and metallic structures. The appropriate substrate depends on factors such as operating temperature, exhaust flow, packaging, durability and application requirements.
5. What is CPSI in a catalytic converter?
CPSI means Cells Per Square Inch. It describes the cell density of a honeycomb substrate.
Different CPSI specifications affect the available geometric surface area, exhaust flow characteristics, pressure drop and catalyst packaging. The appropriate CPSI should be selected according to the application rather than simply choosing the highest available density.
6. What are platinum, palladium and rhodium used for in catalytic converters?
Platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd) and rhodium (Rh) are platinum group metals commonly used in catalytic coatings.
Their roles vary according to catalyst formulation and application. In gasoline three-way catalysts, Pt and Pd are primarily associated with oxidation reactions, while Rh plays an important role in NOx reduction.
Catalyst formulation should be designed according to the engine, fuel type, emission target and operating conditions.
Product Selection & Fitment
7. What is the difference between a universal and direct-fit catalytic converter?
A penukar pemangkin universal is designed to be adapted to a suitable exhaust system and may require cutting, welding or other installation work.
A penukar katalitik muat terus is designed for a specific vehicle application and generally follows the original exhaust configuration, connection points and installation position.
For B2B buyers, the choice depends on the target vehicle market, installation requirements, product range and sales channel.

A high-flow catalytic converter is designed to provide suitable exhaust gas flow while maintaining the required emission-control function.
Its performance depends on substrate structure, cell density, catalyst formulation, exhaust-system design, engine operating conditions and application requirements.
A high-flow design should not be selected only on the basis of flow rate. Emission performance and application compatibility must also be considered.
13. What is a manifold catalytic converter?
A manifold catalytic converter integrates the exhaust manifold and catalytic converter into one assembly.
Because the catalyst is positioned close to the engine, the design can support faster catalyst warm-up and cold-start emission control. Fitment is generally application-specific and depends on the engine and exhaust configuration.
DPF, GPF, DOC & SCR
14. What is a diesel particulate filter (DPF)?
A diesel particulate filter (DPF) is an emission-control device designed to capture particulate matter from diesel exhaust gases.
DPFs commonly use honeycomb filter substrates such as silicon carbide or cordierite. The filter structure allows exhaust gas to pass through porous walls while trapping particulate matter.
15. What is a gasoline particulate filter (GPF)?
A gasoline particulate filter (GPF) is an emission-control device designed to reduce particulate emissions from gasoline engines.
GPFs use a wall-flow filter structure and are commonly applied to gasoline engines equipped with direct-injection or other configurations that produce higher particulate emissions.
16. What is the difference between DPF and GPF?
The main difference is their application.
DPF is designed for diesel engines, while GPF is designed for gasoline engines.
Their substrate, catalyst formulation, thermal environment, regeneration strategy and system calibration can differ according to the specific engine and vehicle application.
