Catalytic Converter Basics

A catalytic converter is an emission-control component installed in a vehicle’s exhaust system. It uses a catalyst-coated substrate to convert harmful exhaust pollutants into less harmful substances. Depending on the engine and emission-control system, catalytic converters can use different catalyst formulations, substrates and configurations.

A three-way catalytic converter (TWC) is primarily used in gasoline engines to control three major pollutants: carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) and nitrogen oxides (NOx).

The catalyst promotes oxidation of CO and HC and reduction of NOx. TWC design depends on the engine, exhaust temperature, air-fuel control, substrate, catalyst coating and applicable emission requirements.

A substrate is the internal structure that supports the catalyst coating and provides channels for exhaust gas flow.

Common substrate materials include ceramic and metallic structures. The appropriate substrate depends on factors such as operating temperature, exhaust flow, packaging, durability and application requirements.

CPSI means Cells Per Square Inch. It describes the cell density of a honeycomb substrate.

Different CPSI specifications affect the available geometric surface area, exhaust flow characteristics, pressure drop and catalyst packaging. The appropriate CPSI should be selected according to the application rather than simply choosing the highest available density.

Platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd) and rhodium (Rh) are platinum group metals commonly used in catalytic coatings.

Their roles vary according to catalyst formulation and application. In gasoline three-way catalysts, Pt and Pd are primarily associated with oxidation reactions, while Rh plays an important role in NOx reduction.

Catalyst formulation should be designed according to the engine, fuel type, emission target and operating conditions.

Product Selection & Fitment

MỘT bộ chuyển đổi xúc tác đa năng is designed to be adapted to a suitable exhaust system and may require cutting, welding or other installation work.

MỘT bộ chuyển đổi xúc tác lắp trực tiếp is designed for a specific vehicle application and generally follows the original exhaust configuration, connection points and installation position.

For B2B buyers, the choice depends on the target vehicle market, installation requirements, product range and sales channel.

The correct catalytic converter should be selected based on several factors, including:

  • Vehicle make and model
  • Năm sản xuất
  • Engine displacement
  • Engine code
  • Fuel type
  • OE number
  • Exhaust configuration
  • Installation position
  • Emission standard
  • Substrate type
  • Kích thước
  • Target market and compliance requirements

For a specific application, providing the OE number, vehicle information, dimensions or sample can help us evaluate the correct configuration.

Fitment should be confirmed using the vehicle model, year, engine code, OE number, dimensions, connection configuration and installation position.

For customized or replacement projects, customers can also provide drawings, photos, product samples or existing component dimensions for technical evaluation.

Yes. OE numbers can be used as an important reference for product identification and fitment evaluation.

For production confirmation, we may also need vehicle information, dimensions, drawings, samples or other technical specifications because OE references can vary by market and vehicle configuration.

Yes. Drawings, samples and technical specifications can be used as references for customized production.

Depending on the project, customization may include substrate dimensions, catalyst configuration, housing design, connection points, sensor ports, brackets, labels and packaging.

A high-flow catalytic converter is designed to provide suitable exhaust gas flow while maintaining the required emission-control function.

Its performance depends on substrate structure, cell density, catalyst formulation, exhaust-system design, engine operating conditions and application requirements.

A high-flow design should not be selected only on the basis of flow rate. Emission performance and application compatibility must also be considered.

A manifold catalytic converter integrates the exhaust manifold and catalytic converter into one assembly.

Because the catalyst is positioned close to the engine, the design can support faster catalyst warm-up and cold-start emission control. Fitment is generally application-specific and depends on the engine and exhaust configuration.

DPF, GPF, DOC & SCR

A diesel particulate filter (DPF) is an emission-control device designed to capture particulate matter from diesel exhaust gases.

DPFs commonly use honeycomb filter substrates such as silicon carbide or cordierite. The filter structure allows exhaust gas to pass through porous walls while trapping particulate matter.

A gasoline particulate filter (GPF) is an emission-control device designed to reduce particulate emissions from gasoline engines.

GPFs use a wall-flow filter structure and are commonly applied to gasoline engines equipped with direct-injection or other configurations that produce higher particulate emissions.

The main difference is their application.

DPF is designed for diesel engines, while GPF is designed for gasoline engines.

Their substrate, catalyst formulation, thermal environment, regeneration strategy and system calibration can differ according to the specific engine and vehicle application.

A Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) is an emission-control component used in diesel exhaust systems.

It primarily supports the oxidation of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons and can also play a role in downstream emission-control processes.

The catalyst formulation and substrate should be selected according to the diesel application and required emission performance.

Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) is an emission-control technology designed primarily to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from diesel exhaust.

An SCR system uses a suitable reductant, such as urea-based solution in automotive applications, to support the chemical reduction of NOx into nitrogen and water.

The catalyst, dosing system, sensors and exhaust temperature all affect SCR system performance.

Common DPF substrate materials include:

  • Silicon carbide (SiC)
  • Cordierit
  • Other application-specific ceramic materials

Silicon carbide is known for its high-temperature resistance and is widely used in demanding diesel particulate filtration applications. Your current 3WayCatalyst SiC DPF product, for example, uses a silicon carbide honeycomb substrate with a 409L stainless steel housing.

Emission Standards & Compliance

Emission requirements depend on the specific product, vehicle application and destination market.

We can evaluate products for applications involving different emission requirements, including Euro-standard vehicle applications. Customers should provide the target market, vehicle information and required emission standard so the applicable specification can be confirmed.

We can provide emission-control products for different vehicle and emission-standard applications, subject to product configuration and project requirements.

The applicable catalyst formulation, substrate, coating, housing and system configuration should be confirmed according to the specific vehicle and market.

Compliance depends on the specific product, vehicle application, certification status and destination market.

EPA and CARB requirements should not be treated as a universal specification for every catalytic converter. Please provide the vehicle information, target market and required certification so the applicable product and compliance requirements can be evaluated.

A CARB Executive Order (EO) number is associated with an emissions-related product approval issued by the California Air Resources Board for applicable aftermarket products.

Whether a particular catalytic converter can be used legally for a specific vehicle depends on the applicable EO, vehicle coverage, model year, engine and installation requirements.

To evaluate compliance and application suitability, we recommend providing:

  • Vehicle make
  • Vehicle model
  • Năm sản xuất
  • Engine size
  • Engine code
  • Fuel type
  • OE number
  • Target country or region
  • Required emission standard
  • Required certification, if applicable

Our engineering team can then evaluate the appropriate product configuration.

P0420 generally indicates that the engine control system has detected catalyst-system efficiency below its expected threshold for Bank 1.

A P0420 code does not automatically prove that the catalytic converter itself is the only problem.

Possible causes can include:

  • Catalytic converter deterioration
  • Rò rỉ khí thải
  • Oxygen sensor problems
  • Động cơ bị lỗi đánh lửa
  • Incorrect air-fuel mixture
  • Fuel-system problems
  • Oil or coolant contamination

Proper diagnosis should be completed before replacing the catalytic converter. This approach is also consistent with the diagnostic guidance covered in 3WayCatalyst’s technical content.

P0430 is generally associated with catalyst-system efficiency below the expected threshold for Bank 2.

As with P0420, the code should not automatically be treated as proof that the catalytic converter has failed.

Possible causes can include catalyst deterioration, exhaust leaks, sensor problems and engine operating issues.

Possible symptoms include:

  • Check engine light
  • Reduced engine performance
  • Tiết kiệm nhiên liệu giảm
  • Abnormal exhaust odor
  • Rattling sounds from the converter
  • Restricted exhaust flow
  • Catalyst-related diagnostic trouble codes

These symptoms can also be caused by other engine or exhaust-system problems, so proper diagnosis is recommended.

Catalytic converter restriction can result from a damaged or melted substrate, excessive deposits, contamination or other exhaust-system problems.

Common contributing factors can include engine misfires, excessive fuel, oil consumption or coolant entering the combustion chamber.

The underlying engine problem should be identified before installing a replacement converter.

A rattling sound can occur when the internal substrate has become cracked, broken or detached from the housing.

However, rattling can also come from other exhaust components such as heat shields, brackets or connections.

The source should be identified before replacing the catalytic converter.

Catalytic converters can experience excessive temperatures when abnormal amounts of unburned fuel enter the exhaust system.

Possible causes include:

  • Động cơ bị lỗi đánh lửa
  • Incorrect air-fuel mixture
  • Fuel-system problems
  • Ignition problems
  • Poor engine calibration
  • Other combustion-related faults

Fixing the underlying engine problem is important before replacing a damaged converter.

The correct solution depends on the type and severity of the problem.

If the catalyst substrate is melted, cracked, physically damaged or chemically degraded, cleaning may not restore its original function.

If contamination or deposits are involved, the underlying cause should first be identified and evaluated.

For replacement projects, vehicle information and OE references should be confirmed before selecting a new catalytic converter.
