What Is a Three-Way Catalytic Converter?
- A three-way catalytic converter (TWC) is an emission control device primarily used in gasoline vehicles. It helps reduce three major pollutants in engine exhaust: nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), and hydrocarbons (HC).
- Inside the converter, exhaust gases pass through a catalyst-coated substrate containing precious metals such as platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), and rhodium (Rh). These catalysts promote oxidation and reduction reactions, converting harmful pollutants into less harmful gases.
NOx → N₂ + O₂ CO → CO₂ HC → CO₂ + H₂O （This three-pollutant conversion capability is why it is called a three-way catalytic converter.）
