What Is a Catalyst Substrate?

A catalyst substrate is the internal support structure used to carry the catalytic coating in an emission control system. Its honeycomb or structured surface provides a large contact area between exhaust gases and the catalyst coating, allowing the required chemical reactions to take place efficiently.
The substrate itself is not the main catalytic material. Instead, it provides the physical structure and surface area needed for the washcoat and active catalyst materials. Substrate design therefore has a direct influence on exhaust flow, heat management, durability, and overall catalyst performance.
