What Is a Catalyst Substrate?

  • A catalyst substrate is the internal support structure used to carry the catalytic coating in an emission control system. Its honeycomb or structured surface provides a large contact area between exhaust gases and the catalyst coating, allowing the required chemical reactions to take place efficiently.
  • The substrate itself is not the main catalytic material. Instead, it provides the physical structure and surface area needed for the washcoat and active catalyst materials. Substrate design therefore has a direct influence on exhaust flow, heat management, durability, and overall catalyst performance.
